Though never recognized as the official flag of South Carolina, the so-called "Sovereignty Flag" flew over the Palmetto State after its secession from the Union on December 20, 1860. It was also raised over Yale University Alumni Hall by Southern sympathizers on January 20th, 1861 and was the inspiration for the later Army of Northern Virginia and Army of Tennessee battle flags.
