In 1862, the Confederate Congress approved a medal for valor but metal shortages prevented the actual medals from being made, although an honor roll was begun. Designed by Mary Ann Cobb Erwin and Sarah E. Gabbett, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) began producing the Southern Cross of Honor - a bronze Maltese cross that featured the Confederate battle flag on one sice and the motto "Deo Vindice" (God Our Vindicator) on the reverse. This polished food-grade stainless steel flask will hold 5 ounces of liquid. Measures approximately 3.5"x3.5"x1" with a screw-on cap.
